Just a few days before Americans around the country commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I had the opportunity to join Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on a visit to Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The world wept when this historic house of worship was attacked during a racially motivated mass shooting on June 17, 2015.
Chairman Priebus and I were blessed to reflect and offer prayers for the families of those impacted by the horrible tragedy.
While I’m saddened by the senseless things we as human beings sometimes do to each other, I’m encouraged by days like this, when our country pauses to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
As we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy through service and with acts of love - not violence - we are reminded of the lessons he taught, and his vision of a country where all of us are empowered to pursue the promise of the American dream. The lessons of his life continue to echo, and inspire us to reach for greater heights – as individuals and as a country.
