Rachel Dolezal is a sign of how far black people have come, but also how many of us have lost our way.
Almost no white person would have chosen to live as black 50 years ago, when doing so meant open bigotry, being barred from public and private facilities and even physical violence.
However, it’s also significant that Dolezal has wanted to make it seem like she did make her choice fifty years ago. Over the past couple of days we have learned of multiple accounts she has crafted of racist abuse against herself that repeatedly fail to hold up, of the kind that sound more like teenaged acting out than adult experiences.
