2015 British Election: Meet the Black British Conservative Candidates Running

Black British Conservative MPs running: Helen Grant,  Sam Gyimah, Adam Afriyie and Kwasi Kwarteng will be running for UK Parliament today.

Adam Afriyie, Windsor, southern England | Tech entrepreneur & shadow minister for science & business innovation

Adam Afriyie is a British Conservative Party politician, and the member of parliament for Windsor. He was first elected at the 2005 general election and re-elected at the 2010 election. In n Parliament, he was a member of the Science and Technology select committee from 2005 until its abolition in July 2007, and has since been a member of the Children, Schools and Families select committee. Since 2010 he has been the President of the Conservative Technology Forum. 

He has been the chair of the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology since 2010.

Helen Grant, Maidstone & The Weald, southeastern England | Attorney

Helen Grant is the Conservative Party’s first black female member of Parliament, for the mostly white, rural, and staunchly Conservative district of Maidstone & The Weald of Kent. She was chosen by Conservative Party leader David Cameron to succeed Ann Widdecombe, who is retiring. Ms. Grant is running on a platform of reforming Maidstone Hospital, defeating Kent International Gateway “to protect our beautiful Kent countryside from predatory developers”, and emphasizing local suppliers and producers.

The Maidstone & the Weald seat is the Conservative Party’s 10th safest district. I.e., barring a massive catastrophe, expect to see her in Parliament this year.

Sam Gyimah, East Surrey, southeastern England | Banker

Sam Gyimah is an ex-Oxford Union president whose parents come from Ghana, he was voted CBI’s “Entrepreneur Of The Future”. He writes on his website: “In 2003, I left my City Job at Goldman Sachs to start a small business which trained and placed low-skilled people into work. When I left three years later, we were turning over £10m [US$15.5 million], had a staff of 70, had trained 4,000 people and I was named CBI Entrepreneur of the Future for my efforts.”

Mr. Gyimah is running in the 6th safest Tory seat in the country.

Kwasi Kwarteng, Spelthorne, southeastern England | Journalist & historian

Mr. Kwarteng, whose parents are from Ghana. He writes on his website: “I was very fortunate to win a scholarship to Eton College, when I was 13. I enjoyed History in particular, which I then proceeded to read at Trinity College, Cambridge. I earned a Bachelor’s degree and a PhD in British History and was also on the series-winning team on University Challenge in Jeremy Paxman’s first year as the host. I have worked as a company analyst in the City for seven years, and as a journalist.”
