Black Conservative Councilman to run for Ohio Senate

It's official: Cincinnati Councilman Charlie Winburn has decided to run for state Senate, taking on former colleague Cecil Thomas.

"The people of Greater Cincinnati should send me to be their representative in the Ohio Senate because I have a track record of getting things done and the ability to deliver good-government policies," Winburn told The Enquirer in an exclusive interview.

Winburn, 63, a minister and motivational speaker from Mount Airy, will replace placeholder candidate Jackie Mikita as the Republican nominee for the 9th Senate District. It's expected to take two to three weeks for Mikita to withdraw formally and the county GOP executive committee to name Winburn to the ballot.
