Welfare Programs the Biggest Budget Expenditure
There are 83 overlapping federal welfare programs that together represented the single largest budget item in 2011—more than the nation spends on Social Security, Medicare, or national defense. This is according to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Office. This $1.03 trillion in federal spending is accompanied by $283 billion in state spending on some of those same federal programs.
Remember this the next time you hear someone wailing about a proposed cut in food stamp spending from the federal farm bill. Why do we even have a farm bill and farm subsidies? That is, itself, gross welfare. Enough already.
